While the federal government continues to address obesity levels in Australia, the Queensland state government is now offering additional support to residents looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Queensland Health has launched Lighten Up, a new program offering group-based education workshops over seven weeks.

The initiative targets adults who are beginning to show the initial signs of obesity, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, increasing weight, poor nutrition and a lack of physical activity.

While the program will primarily focus on preparing healthy food and increasing fitness, it will also advice on how to cope with stress, establish a support network and sustain the new healthier lifestyle.

"Many people set themselves up to fail by thinking short-term or trying to do too much at once," Queensland Health Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator Kerry Roach said (March 9).

"Lifestyle change takes time and you have to be prepared to set a steady pace."

Those looking to achieve a healthy lifestyle in the long term may also benefit from having a private health insurance policy which may offer access to wellbeing programs that incorporate advice on diet and exercise.
